“The Hole” on Douglas between Main and Market has finally been filled. A temporary pop-up urban park has been constructed in its place. The park is now home to an open area filled with seating, planters, artwork, a cement ping-pong table, space for local food trucks to park, and space for bands or other activities to set up in. The new park is hoped to be a walkable destination for many downtown workers.
The pop-up park came to be after a grant totalling $146,025. was given to the Wichita Downtown Development Corporation by Knight Foundation Fund of Wichita Community Foundation.
The area fell into a state of disarray and became “The Hole” in 2008 when a re-development project fell through. The space has been filled by excess dirt from the River Vista development project nearby. The Pop-Up Urban Park is meant to be temporary in nature as the site is now owned by local development team Bokeh Development; who owns the two buildings adjacent the lot. The park allows for the eye-sore that was “The Hole” to be a more pleasant site and, when the market allows, for Bokeh Development to develop the space as needed.
