Local Breweries Place at National Beer Competition
It’s no secret to local Wichitan’s that we have some amazing breweries. Recently at the Great American Beer Fest in Denver, Colorado. two Wichita breweries, Hopping Gnome Brewing, and Central Standard Brewing took home awards for their brews.
“There were 124 Ambers entered, so getting a silver medal is a great honor, and the fact that 2 breweries from Wichita received medals the same year is really impressive.” Said Stacy Ward-Lattin Co-owner of Hopping Gnome Brewing Company.
Hopping Gnome brought home the silver medal for the “American Amber” category and Central Standard Brewing brought home a gold medal for the “Historical Beer” category.
“To put it into perspective, breweries that have been around for 20 years may only have a couple of these medals, if any at all. Most brewers enter beers every year just to get feedback from judges...no one really expects to win, especially in a popular category like the American Amber.” Said Ward-Lattin “there are 4 sessions with over 800 breweries and around 62,000 people attend these sessions total...I believe there were over 8,000 beers entered into the competition in 2018.”
Wichita is beginning to grow a name for itself in the craft beer community. With other local breweries having a history of placing at the festival.
“Wichita is putting out some quality craft beer, which is no surprise to our customers. CSB has won two medals, and WBC has one from GABF and another from the World Beer Cup, and all of these breweries are fairly new, less than 10 years old” said Ward-Lattin.
