An ongoing legal battle regarding the African elephants that now call the Sedgwick County Zoo home has ended.
Friends of Animals, an animal rights group, has dropped the lawsuit it filed against the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, who approved the elephants’ transfer from Swaziland, Africa, to three United States zoos in Wichita, Dallas and Omaha.
The elephants arrived to these zoos approximately a month ago.
Friends of Animals began the lawsuit in February, suing the Fish and Wildlife Service for having issued the permits for transfer in January. The suit claimed that the toll, both physical and mental, that the move would take on the elephants had not been considered.
Joining on the side of the government, the zoos recently helped to argue that the lawsuit was moot as the transfer had already taken place.
