Brrr. When the weather turns cold, a hot bowl of delicious soup can make the cold momentarily disappear. With your fingers nearly frozen, the first bite makes you forget all about scraping your car windows in the morning while the steam from the bowl warms your face.
During winter in Wichita, soup is serious business and that’s why we’re dedicating a blog to the 10 best places around town to get a great bowl of hot soup this winter - or anytime!
Note: for the purposes of this blog we’re not including pho. See our Best Pho in Wichita blog for the best pho options.
Tanya’s Soup Kitchen

The best and most unique soups in Wichita, hands down.
A staple of the Douglas Design District, Tanya’s Soup Kitchen is the number one choice for most Wichitans when it comes to soup - I mean, it’s in the name! Named for the late and beloved Tanya Tandoc, this place does soup the right way - fresh and locally sourced.
They offer four great soups daily at lunch during the week and include dinner hours on Friday and Saturday. Soups are rotated seasonally and diners have the option to dine-in, carry out or take pre-packaged soups home to enjoy. It’s a good idea to get there early for lunch because this is a popular spot around noon.
And then as a friendly PSA, if your table is done eating and you see people waiting, move on and let those poor, starving people have your table so they can eat as well. Your conversation about whether or not you like the Wichita flag can always be had outside in the parking lot anyway.

Bagatelle Bakery

Come for the bakery goods, stay for the soups and bread.
Most known to Wichita for their delicious cakes and desserts, Bagatelle also offers two different homemade soups daily served with amazing bread. They are a great compliment to the Mediterranean-inspired dishes served for lunch as well.
Located on Harry between Woodlawn and the turnpike, Bagatelle is anything but ordinary and anything but boring. The atmosphere is lively and friendly and you’ll most likely want to come back for the soups and bread long after the cold weather stops becoming your excuse.

La Gallette French Bakery

A long-standing Wichita favorite with the flavor of France.
For over 20 years the little French bakery in Delano has been serving up excellent lunchtime fare with unique quiches, sandwiches, salads and, of course, soups. La Gallette’s soups are an amazing compliment to their other offerings, but they stand on their own as well.
As you’d expect this is another busy place at lunch, so get there early as parking can be tricky. The staff is very friendly and the service is usually quick. You can dine-in or carry out, but why not dine-in? Work will still be there when you’re finished.

A Wichita family tradition since 1932 and a must-visit for every Wichitan.
Old Mill Tasty Shop is a family-run soda fountain shop from way back in the days when White Castle hamburgers were still a thing in Wichita. What you may not have known is how good their blue plate specials are as well as their soups!
Located on Douglas next to Barleycorn’s, they are open for lunch daily with extended hours on the weekend. If you call yourself a Wichitan and haven’t ever been, you owe it to yourself and The Keeper to head there immediately for tasty treats and a bit of Wichita history.

My compliments to the chef…
If you’re in the mood for soup in a more formal atmosphere, Larkspur serves up daily inspired soup creations from the head chef. You won’t know what it is until you arrive (or you call ahead, you Type A, you), but you can go knowing that whatever is on the menu will be full of gourmet goodness.
Located right in the heart of Old Town, you won’t have to look far for something to do after you’ve gorged on gazpacho, feasted on French onion or slurped on split pea. Cinnamon's Deli

Bread bowls...bread bowls everywhere.
Cinnamon’s Deli is another iconic Wichita franchise most notable for their soups in a bread cup or bread bowl. They have a standing variety of soups, including: two types of potato soup, cream of broccoli, clam chowder, baja chicken enchilada, Wisconsin cheese, tomato bisque and chicken noodle.
You may leave Cinnamon’s fuller than you’d wanted to, but in the cold weather, you’re going to need that extra insulation anyway. What, you got a hot date or something?

You’re probably within shouting distance of one right now.
Yes, Panera is the most pervasive soup destination around the Wichita area. They serve up a delicious variety of soups made with their signature transparency with respect to ingredients, health information and calories (if you want to know that sort of thing).
If indeed calories are something you’re looking out for these days, most of their soups are listed under 500 calories and also include vegetarian and vegan options. Their website has a complete downloadable nutrition guide as well so you can show your personal trainer you’ve been “on plan” with your diet. That should help you avoid any of their disappointed looks or dreaded extra reps added onto your workout.

Not just another deli with soup.
McAlister’s Deli might appear to be yet another deli offering soups, but there’s more than meets the eye in these great soup choices. They offer an exceptionally good fire roasted vegetable soup - good enough for even those who aren’t big on veggie soups and even offer a veggie chili option.
Their other staples like tomato bisque, country potato and broccoli cheddar are exceptionally good as well. Their website also has all of their ingredients, allergen information and nutrition facts listed for each soup so you can make an informed choice. Whichever you choose, you’ll leave with a good taste in your mouth.

Like Panera, they have four locations around town so you’re never far away from a Schlotzsky’s in Wichita. No one should ever have to go without soup, and with the mix of chains and local favorites around town - we won’t have to.
