LLS Man and Woman of the Year
Did you know that someone new is diagnosed with a blood cancer every three minutes? Though this is a bleak statistic, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society offers hope. As the world's largest national voluntary health organization dedicated to curing leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, LLS is improving the quality of life for patients and families every day.
This year marks the 18th Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Man and Woman of the Year competition in Wichita! The competition, which raises funds for blood cancer research, has been successful since its inception, raising $220,000 in 2016 alone.
Boy and Girl of the Year: Thom and Eevie
Candidates compete in honor of local children who are blood cancer survivors. Each year, two local children are selected as the Boy and Girl of the Year. The Wichita chapter of the Leukemia Lymphoma society has named Thom the 2017 Boy of the Year and Eevie the 2017 Girl of the Year. Funds raised for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society in honor of these two brave heroes will be used to further LLS blood cancer research.
How it Works
Throughout the year, the LLS website offers a nomination form for the competition, where Wichitans can nominate prominent members of the community to run for Man or Woman of the Year. Candidates are then chosen from the nominations that have been submitted.
Selected candidates then engage in an exciting 10-week competition to plan events and secure donations for their campaigns. Candidates each form their own team and use their contacts and creativity to raise the highest possible amount of funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Each dollar raised counts as one vote, and the male and female candidates with the most votes are named the Man and Woman of the Year, respectively.
In addition to the campaign events planned by candidates, the Man and Woman of the Year competition offers three major events that allow candidates to interact with each other and meet local business figures.
Kickoff Celebration, Mar. 9: This is the official beginning of the fundraising period. At the Kickoff Celebration, candidates socialize, network and meet the Boy & Girl of the Year.
The Mid-Point Event: At the halfway point in the campaign, this event gives candidates an opportunity to come together to acknowledge and celebrate the progress they've made and to focus on goals ahead. A final date has yet to be released.
Grand Finale, May 20: The announcement of the Man & Woman of the Year winners is a celebration of all the candidates efforts as a collective class. Surrounded by team members and friends, they enjoy food, cocktails, music and an outstanding auction.
