Celebrating Groundhog Day in Wichita

Celebrating Groundhog Day in Wichita

Groundhog Day © 1993 Columbia Pictures Corporation

Most of us recognize Groundhog Day as one of two things: a day on which a groundhog (Punxsutawney Phil, to be precise) pops out of a hole to determine the weather for the next six weeks or the 1993 Bill Murray movie in which he repeatedly lives through the same Groundhog Day over and over.

What most people don’t recognize, however, is that Groundhog Day also presents a great opportunity for learning. If you’ve got small children, Groundhog Day presents a great opportunity to teach them about seasonal changes and weather patterns.

Kansas Kids Connect at Exploration Place

Kansas Kids Connect at Explora

Exploration Place’s Kansas Kids Connect permanent exhibit, designed specifically for preschoolers, allows children to fill a cloud with water and watch it rain.

Focusing on elements of Kansas life that are heavily influenced by the weather, Kansas Kids Connect allows children to plant gardens, learn how wheat grows, visit a farmers market and more!

The excitement that surrounds Groundhog Day makes this the perfect time to get the kids geared up to learn! Kansas Kids Connect is included with general admission and is free for members.

The learning doesn’t stop there! The Cosmosphere also celebrates Groundhog Day with a special event this year, though it takes a different approach.

The Museum’s Space out Saturday program, which highlights a different theme each month, will devote the month of February to shadows in honor of Groundhog Day! Students will enjoy hands-on learning by making their very own shadow boxes!

Space Out Saturdays are free to attend and fall on the third Saturday of each month. February’s Space Out Saturday will run from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Feb. 18 in the Cosmosphere lobby.

If you wish to continue to Explore Kansas, you’re in luck! A new exhibit by this name will open at Exploration Place on April 1.

The exhibit primarily highlights our state’s water, land, weather and wildlife. Guests will have the opportunity to encounter bison, discover weather instruments in a storm chaser vehicle, determine personal water use and much more in the upcoming exhibit! We don't know about you, but we're pretty excited to see it!
