Celebrate Brothers and Sisters Day with the Kansas Bigs Program
It’s National Brothers and Sisters day, so take some time to show your siblings that you appreciate them. Whether you go out to dinner together or simply set aside some time for a quick phone call, you’ll likely brighten your siblings’ day. The celebration doesn't have to stop there, either. If you're looking for a unique way to get into Brothers and Sisters Day, and bring smiles to even more faces, it's a great opportunity to get involved with the Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters program.
The Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters program offers a unique opportunity to build relationships with local children who are considered at-risk and live in single-parent homes. The program pairs children who are facing adversity with a designated “Big” that they can count on, confide in, and have fun with! When you become a Big, you’ll develop a one-on-one relationship with your Little, and you’ll be able to provide a positive influence that he or she may not otherwise have. Through a series of events and activities, you’ll be able to bond with your Little, and potentially form a friendship that will last a lifetime. You’ll have the opportunity to help your Little achieve his or her full potential and ultimately to make a positive impact on a child’s life.
The program has demonstrated results through a recent study comparing children in the Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters program with other children. According to Kansasbigs.org, the study found that children who had been in the program for 18 months were 46 percent less likely to begin using illegal drugs, 27 percent less likely to begin using alcohol, 52 percent less likely to skip school, 37 percent less likely to skip a class, and 33 percent less likely to hit another person. The study also noted improved confidence and family relationships.
