10 Tips For Dealing With A Job Loss

Losing your job is nothing to be ashamed of. There could be many reasons that your place of employment has decided to part ways with you; whether it’s redundancy, downsizing, or any number of other causes, you shouldn’t allow it to reflect poorly on your self-esteem or your confidence when it comes to future prospects. However, this won’t necessarily help you in the short-term, when you’re trying to work out how to survive on a day-to-day basis. Here are 10 tips for dealing with a job loss, picking yourself up, and getting back out there again.

1. Don’t panic

First and foremost, you shouldn’t panic if you happen to lose your job. As we said, it happens to everyone at some point or another, and it doesn’t necessarily reflect negatively on your ability or your standing as an employee. Panicking could lead you to make poor decisions that will negatively impact you in the long run, so try to stay calm. If you have friends and family around you, talk to them and make sure they know how you’re feeling so they can emotionally support you.

2. Figure out your finances

Hopefully, your employer will have given you plenty of notice so you can work out what you’re going to do with your finances in advance. Either way, you should make sure that you know where your money is coming from if you can. It’s also important to claim as many benefits as possible; you’re entitled to them, so make sure they’re on your radar. If you’re really struggling, you’ll find that there are lenders out there who will provide loans for people on benefits, so you can use that if you need to as well.

3. Don’t get angry

While a job loss can be a shattering experience, it’s not a good idea to get angry, either with your employer, with your colleagues, or with those around you. Anger isn’t necessarily a healthy way to deal with a situation like this; after all, there’s nothing you can do, so you’re better off channeling those emotions into something constructive. You also don’t want to burn bridges, as employers or colleagues might be helpful later on, when you might need help with future career changes.

4. Think of it as an opportunity

This might be the perfect time to consider whether you were truly happy in your job. Could this be a good time to think about a career change? You might have found the moment when you can transition to something new that really does excite you. The financial instability that comes from losing your job can be daunting, but you might be able to alleviate that worry by thinking about how you’re going to start a new chapter of your life.

5. Start working on your CV

Whether you call it a CV or a resume, the document that you hand over to employees is one of the most important things in your life. As such, losing your job could be a great opportunity to work on that document and add some information to it. Naturally, you’ll have to update it anyway, because you’ll need to reflect your change of circumstance. However, you could also take this time to revise it, brushing up on any areas that aren’t quite satisfactory.

6. Start looking for a new job immediately

As soon as you’re told that you’ll no longer be working at your current job, it’s time to start looking for a new one. Trawl job websites like Indeed and Totaljobs, making sure to upload your CV for quicker and easier applications. However, not everything is online; you may have to make a physical trip to hand over your CV in person to other outlets to which you’re interested in applying. Whatever you do, just make sure you’re looking as soon as you know you need a new job.

7. Learn some new skills

As well as brushing up your CV, this could be a great opportunity to add some more skills to your repertoire. Think about what you might be considering as a new career opportunity. Are there any skills that you’ll need, or that will stand you in good stead, to start down that path? Skills like SEO, web design, and marketing can all be useful in a number of different positions, so consider signing up for a course or learning some new skills online if you can.

8. Create a new budget

After a job loss, your finances are naturally going to feel different. You won’t have the same source of income you once relied on, so it’s time to create an entirely new budget for yourself. Take a look at your bank accounts and work out where you can make some cuts. You might need to be a little harsh with yourself; some areas aren’t going to feel good for cutting back, but you’ll need to if you want to keep your finances feeling healthy.

9. Don’t forget to have fun

It’s possible to become so consumed by the fact of losing your job that you forget to take any time for yourself. Don’t forget to set aside some time for enjoying yourself with hobbies you love. In some ways, hobbies will actually improve your productivity, because they’ll give your mind some much-needed downtime and allow you to recover emotionally from the grueling job search process. Be sure to set aside as much time as you need for yourself.

10. Brush up on your interview technique

Losing your job can also be a golden opportunity to brush up on your interview technique. Start thinking about how you’re going to talk to any potential interviewers or employers if you do manage to land a new interview soon. Anticipate questions you might be asked and come up with smart, witty answers to those questions. If you can, enlist the help of friends and family for this step, as they might be able to spot things you can’t.
