Where to Get Ice Cream in West Wichita

National Ice Cream Day

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream. First introduced to the United States in 1744, President George Washington apparently spent close to $200 in the summer of 1790 on ice cream. Celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of July each year, today is National Ice Cream Day!

As a west sider with a sweet tooth, here are a few of my favorite ice cream places in West Wichita!

Baskin-Robbins

I'm so excited about the relocation and grand opening of Baskin-Robbins in West Wichita! This locally owned franchise partnered with Nestle Toll House "Cafe by Chip" and is the first establishment of its kind in the world (cool, huh?) A few favorites include jamoca almond fudge and peanut butter fudge. Make sure to ask about their ice cream cookie sandwiches made with their freshly baked Nestle Toll House cookies (can't wait to try this).

They also offer a layered sundae where you have several options to choose from, such as Oreo and cookie dough (I tried the Reese’s Peanut Butter cup. WOW! Was it delicious). Did you know that you can create any flavor combination, to satisfy your taste buds, when ordering their shakes and sundaes! I had the chance to try their Mocha Blast made with vanilla ice cream and coffee, topped with chocolate and cinnamon. What a nice refreshing sweet treat on this hot summer day!

Location: West 21st Street North (near the Warren Theatre)

Hours: Mon-Thurs: 11 a.m. - 10 p.m.  |  Fri-Sat: 11 a.m. - 11 p.m.  |  Sun: 12 - 10 p.m.

Braum’s

With a selection of ice cream and sherbet flavors, you will surely find something for everyone! They even offer a no-sugar-added frozen yogurt as well as a light ice cream menu. The tasty fun doesn't stop there as they serve up a classic banana split and ice cream sundae.

Locations: 440 North Tyler Road & 2121 North Ridge Road
Hours: 6 a.m. - 10:45 p.m.

Tropicana

Tropicana Ice Cream

This hidden gem is a small family owned franchise serving up fresh ingredients. Don't be overwhelmed by their menu, which has just about everything, including dairy free options! Want a paletas (popsicle) you have two choices: fruit which is dairy-free or cream-based (more traditional). They also offer traditional ice cream as well as fresh fruit sorbets (dairy-free). If you are feeling adventurous you can try their funnel cake topped with ice cream and chocolate sauce. I tried the mango sorbet and can taste the bits of mango as I took each sweet tasty bite, next time I'll have to try their funnel cake.

Location: 2021 North Amidon

Hours: Mon-Sun: 9 a.m. - 11 p.m.

Freddy's Frozen Custard

This Wichita based chain has been a staple here since 2002. They serve up a variety of sundaes and concerts. Make sure to check out their Limited Time specials, my favorite is anything with snickers (yum!)!

Locations: 8621 W. 21st St N and 420 S. Ridge Road

Hours: Sun-Thurs: 10:30 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.  |  Fri-Sat: 10:30 a.m. - 11:00 p.m.

Dairy Queen

A classic place to go for a nice cold treat. Known for their Blizzard and ice cream cakes, did you know that you can also get a warm chocolate chip cookie filled with hot fudge and topped with their soft serve and cocoa fudge?

Locations: Towne West Square & 3820 North Maize Road

Hours: Mall Hours (generally 10 a.m. - 9 p.m.), 10:30 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.

Cold Stone Creamery

Coldstone Creamery Wichita

Known for their mix-ins, did you know that their ice cream is made fresh daily at each location? You can either order one of their signature creations or create your own. I took my son there and we decided to create our own, mixing Kit-Kat with chocolate ice cream as well as with cake batter ice cream (one of their best sellers).

Employee favorites include Chocolate Lava Meltdown from their Hot Stone menu. They also offer dairy-free options with a selection of Sorbet which you can mix with fresh fruit or crunchy nuts.

Locations: New Market Square & 7325 W. Taft St.

Hours: Sun-Thurs: 11 a.m. - 9 p.m.  |  Fri-Sat: 11 a.m. - 11 p.m.

Little Lion Ice Cream

Okay, okay... this isn't based on the West side, but you can find them downtown, so that's close enough, right?

They have two carts which can be found around town and every Saturday at the Old Town Farmers Market. All their ice cream is made fresh using seasonal ingredients and pairings from local farmers.

Looking for something different? Order one of their freshly made waffles topped with your choice of ice cream and locally grown fruit. I get really excited about their dairy-free options. Yes! They also cater to vegans with a coconut milk based chocolate ice cream (can't wait to try this one!) and avocado lime coconut milk sorbet. They also have other flavors they cycle through, just ask them what they are scooping up that day.

Some of their traditional favorites include: "Mr. Elderlsie," which is made with a cream cheese base and freshly made blackberry sauce, as well as their coffee with salted caramel ice cream. Follow their Facebook page to see where they are appearing next!

Andy's Frozen Custard

Andy's Frozen Custard

One of the west sides favorite places to go where you can find lots to chose from. Their options include banana splits, concretes (we tried the BootDaddy, it was tasty!) and shakes. They are noted for their selection of toppings such as cookie dough, strawberry, brownie, and espresso. For those looking for something dairy-free, they have Italian Ice in three flavors: lemon, strawberry (my personal favorite), and raspberry. Pass by there on a hot day and it is hopping with people.

Location: 10788 W. 21st St. N
Hours: Sun-Thurs: 11.am. - 11:30 p.m.  |  Fri- Sat 11 a.m. - Midnight
