Herbivore Havens: Vegan Restaurants in Wichita
As a vegan, one of the questions I get asked a lot by fellow Wichitans is:
“I have someone coming to stay with me who’s vegan. Where can we go to eat?”
So let me help a herbivore out. Wichita dishes up plenty of fabulous plant-based eats for vegans, omnis, and the veggie-curious alike. Not only are there all-vegan dining options in ICT, but there are several restaurants that offer designated vegan dishes.
Here are some of the best vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants in Wichita (as chosen by my vegan friends and I in a totally unofficial manner).
Lotus Leaf Cafe
Lotus Leaf offers delicious, nutritious vegan sandwiches, salads, smoothies and entrees, all helpfully marked on the menu. Don’t miss the Cauli-Power appetizer—it’s INSANELY delicious. Last time I was there, they also had not one but TWO vegan desserts, including a chocolate “cheezcake” that was nothing short of heavenly.
Lotus Leaf also promotes sustainable and fair trade foods, giving you options that are good for people and planet.
This chef-casual restaurant features fresh, colorful, beautifully plated dishes, with an emphasis on keeping food in its whole form. My personal favorite is the Vegan Quinoa Crunch Bowl, which is not only tasty, but just makes you feel good after eating it. Vegan options are marked on the menu, but don’t be shy about asking for recommendations and daily specials. There may just be some off-menu surprises.
Songbird Juice Co
Wichita’s Original Cold-Pressed Juicery offers fresh juices, smoothies and acai bowls made with mindfully sourced, clean ingredients. Nearly all of the ingredients are vegan, too (smoothies are made with non-dairy milks)—the only non-vegan item I spotted on the menu was honey in some of the acai bowls and blends. All juices have no additives or preservatives and are never High Pressure Processed. Just fresh, delicious liquid health. Ahhhhhhh.
Songbird has a Riverside location and a juice truck, plus you can find their products at several area farmers markets.
NiceBites Vegan Bakery
Once upon a time, Wichita vegans were rather limited in the types of baked goodies we could buy. No more! NiceBites, Wichita’s first vegan bakery, opened in 2016. The mother-daughter team behind NiceBites specializes in transforming traditionally non-vegan favorites, like brownies and gooey cinnamon rolls, into vegan-friendly treats. Muffins, breads, cupcakes, sheet cakes, truffles, candies...they’ve got it all. They do birthday cakes and even wedding cakes, too.
How can you get your hands on these vegan delights? You can call or text NiceBites directly to order, or you can find them at local farmer’s markets and coffee shops.
Kind Kravings Food Truck
Wichita’s first vegan food truck, and one of the only double-decker food trucks of its kind! Order downstairs at the window, then head upstairs to dine if the fancy strikes you. Kind Kravings’ delicious, old-fashioned comfort foods, drinks and desserts (with a healthy twist!) have earned rave reviews from omnivores, too. They offer lunch and dinner, plus breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays. (The Cinnamon Roll pancakes are nothing short of a religious experience.)
You can often find Kind Kravings at the ICT Urban Pop-Up Park. Check out their schedule here.
Wheat Street Dogs
One of the things I remember about growing up in Los Angeles was going to Dodgers games and getting those ballpark hot dogs wrapped in foil and loaded with toppings. Now I can recreate that taste at Wheat Street Dogs, a gourmet vegan hot dog cart.
Let’s be honest—not all vegan hot dogs you can buy at the store are great, but these delicious handcrafted meat-free hot dogs and sausages are something else entirely. Plus, you get tons of fresh, flavorful toppings. (The Banh Mi Dog ohmygosh The Banh Mi Dog.) Check out Facebook for their schedule.
Beautiful Day Cafe
Beautiful Day Cafe’s seasonal menus are founded in organic practices. Whenever possible, they source from local and regional farmers and fair/direct trade cooperatives. They also use goods grown in the adjacent Green Street Permaculture Garden.
Beautiful Day Cafe offers vegan options for breakfast and lunch. This is a regular meetup spot for my friends and I—the Biscuits and Gravy, Breakfast Bowl and Rawcos are special faves. (Plus, Rawcos is fun to say. Try it. Rrrrrrawcos.)
Passage to India
Now with MOAR VEGAN! Passage to India has long been a favorite of local plant eaters for their many meat-free rice, veggie and curry dishes. They recently rolled out an all-vegan menu you can get on request. TWO PAGES OF HERBIVOROUS GOODNESS: apps, entrees, breads, desserts, even wines. This place is a go-to for the Wichita Veg Meetup Group, so you know it’s good.
Oh Yeah! China Bistro
This fine-dining Chinese restaurant offers a wide array of traditional Asian favorites, available with plant-based protein options. Several of the appetizers are also vegan—you’ll never lack for choices! For former omnis missing old favorites like Sweet n’ Sour Pork or General Tso’s Chicken, Oh Yeah! has plant-protein alternatives that recreate those flavors. I love the sweet n’ sour Love & Compassion dish.
In addition to dine-in and carry-out, Oh Yeah! China Bistro offers a delivery option for Wichita’s Northeast side.
Yokohama Ramen Joint
Noodles NOM. Wichita’s first ramen joint, located in Delano, is heaven for herbivores. We get an entire menu section, filled to the brim with vegan ramen, yakisoba, fried rice, tempura, and teriyaki tofu. Everything I’ve tried has been great, and the portions are generous. Plus, it’s just a fun place to eat.
Lemongrass Taste of Vietnam
This is one of my favorite restaurants, located in Old Town Square. While they don’t have a huge number of vegan dishes, the ones they have are spoken about in pure rapture by Wichita herbivores. Seriously, we have stories about the first time we tried their tofu. The staff is also super helpful and knowledgeable. You can dine in or carry out.
(Author here stops writing to go order Shaky Tofu…)
Another favorite dinner spot for the Wichita Veg Meetup group, this restaurant (nestled back in Carriage Parkway) has lovely ambiance, helpful and friendly service, and several vegan options. I’ve never tried something here that wasn’t absolutely delicious. (Even eggplant, which is hard to prepare and I don’t usually like, is one of my faves at Thai Traditions.)
Tanya’s Soup Kitchen
This beloved Wichita favorite, located in the Douglas Design District, always has at least one vegan soup daily. There are also unique, fresh, handcrafted sandwiches and salads. Vegan options are clearly marked on the menu. You can dine in or take food to go.
Located in Delano, Milkfloat has a great vibe along with tasty vegan delights. You can get your coffee made with almond or coconut milk, and there’s usually at least one vegan pastry or dessert option on offer. Treat yourself.
Little Lion Ice Cream
Featuring handcrafted flavors that are made with care, Little Lion Ice Cream offers frosty treats that are organic and non GMO. There's always a vegan option available. They have a permanent location—Little Lion Cafe at Revolutsia—and you can also find them at various farmer’s markets and shops.
Vegan Wednesdays at the Donut Whole
A vegan does not live on granola alone. Every now and then (or more often than that, let’s be real here) we enjoy the sweet, starchy goodness of a donut. The Donut Whole offers a wide selection of vegan donuts every Wednesday, from old school cake donuts to their signature colorful creations. Homer J, anyone?
There You Have It!
So there you have it! This isn’t an exhaustive list, and many Wichita restaurants have menu items that are vegan or can be made vegan. There’s no problem dining out in Wichita if you’re a herbivore.
I’d love to hear about your favorite places in the comments!
