Beer, Food and Family Fun this Weekend

It's time for your Wichita weekend, and it's going to be great! Check out these local events.

Wichita Wingnuts vs Lincoln Saltdogs at Lawrence Dumont Stadium, May 20, 21, and 22

Play ball! Catch the Wichita Wingnuts on opening weekend as they go head-to-head with the Lincoln Saltdogs! The season officially begins on Thursday, but the Wingnuts will be playing all weekend long.  Games will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets range in price from $6 to $13. 

The Wingnuts are Wichita's only professional baseball team, and they are a part of the Central Division of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. The Wingnuts Season begins this weekend and runs through October, so come out and cheer on the team! 


Mike Epps at Hartman Arena, May 20

Get ready for a laugh riot, as Hartman Arena hosts comedian Mike Epps on Friday night. An, actor, film producer, writer and rapper as well as a stand-up comedian, Mike Epps Does is all. 

Epps is best known for the role of Day-Day Jones in Next Friday and its sequel, Friday After Next. You might also recognize him as "Black Doug" from the Hangover franchise. Catch Mike Epps at Hartman Arena on May 20 at 8 p.m. Tickets prices start at $25.

Pirates of Penzance at Wichita Grand Opera, May 20

Pirates of Penzance at Wichita

The Wichita Grand Opera performs the Gilbert and Sullivan classic, Pirates of Penzance this weekend. Catch hits like "I Am the Very Model of A Modern Major General," "When Fredrick was a Little Lad," "Poor Wondering One" and more. You'll see the pirates in their natural element, as the show will be performed on water in Bradley Fair's floating ampitheatre! "Pirates of Penzance" is a hilarious farce that chronicles the happenings of a merry band of sentimental pirates, dim-witted young lovers, and an eccentric Major-General. Tickets range in price from $37 to $85, and the show begins at 8 p.m.

Bug-O-Rama at Sedgwick County Park, May 21

This annual car event is the only one around that features exclusively Volkswagen vehicles! Registration to enter a vehicle in Bug-O-Rama is $25 in advance and $30 on the day of the show, and proceeds help raise funds for and transport children to the Shriners Hospitals for Children of North America and the Q Foundation for Kids. The event is free for the public to attend, and will take place at Sedgwick County Park at shelter one. Cone out from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. to enjoy the fun! Bug-O-Rama will offer awards for the best engine, best paint, best interior and best of show. The event will also food trucks, music, prizes and more! Registration begins at 8 a.m.


Play on a Plane Day at the Kansas Aviation Museum, May 21

We're all see planes fly through the sky. Some of us have even rode one, but have you ever played on one? Now you can! This weekend, the Kansas Aviation Museum hosts Play on a Plane Day, where guests are invited to cone out and explore the planes at their leisure!

The planes only open one day a year, so check it out while you can! On Saturday, May 21, the planes will be open until 4 p.m., and the museum is open until 6 p.m. Admission is $8 per person. 


Summer Opening Party at the Wichita Art Museum, May 21

Join the Wichita Art Musem in celebrating its newest exhibition, Chihuly Drawings. Featuring over 35 years of drawings by internationally recognized glass artist, Dale Chihuly, the exhibition is a sight to behold. The summer opening party will also offer a cash bar, live music performed by the Arnold Palmers, lively party antics and more. The event will be held in the S. Jim and Darla Farha Great Hall from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Admission is free for members of the Wichita Art Museum, and  $10 for the public. Dinner will also be available in the Muse Cafe, but reservations are recommended.

Bobby Bones at the Orpheum, May 21

Catch funnyman Bobby Bones as he returns to Wichita's historic Orpheum theatre to perform his solo comedy act, "Funny and Alone" this Saturday, May 21 at 8 p.m.

Bobby Bones is a well-known on-air radio personality. He hosts a national weekday program called the Bobby Bones Show that originates from Nashville, Tenn. Now, you can see him live! Tickets to see Bobby Bones's Funny and Alone are available for $27.50 and $52.50. VIP tickets are available in limited quantities and come with pre-show meet and greet. 


Wine-O Trail Run at Wheat State Wine Co., May 21

Wine makes everything better, including running. This year, Wheat State Wine Co. hosts the fourth annual Wine-O Trail run, featuring some brand new options. Now you can sign up to run, jog, or walk on a trail course that's 10K, 5K or two miles long. The choice is yours! Water stops and wine tastings will be set up along the way, and alternative beverages will be available for participants under the age of 21. 

Registration is $50 and includes a Wine-O Trail Run t-shirt, a glass of wine (for participants 21 and older), a goodie bag, and more.Proceeds from the event benefit the William Newton Healthcare Foundation.

Midwest Beerfest

Come out and celebrate Wichita’s 16th annual Midwest Beerfest this weekend! Running from May 20 to the21, Beerfest will feature several great beer-centered events! On May 20, Beer & Food Lovers Beer Dinners will be available, featuring some if the finest American beers available paired with delectable foods to complement each drink. Beer dinners will begin at 7 p.m. at three different locations, All Things BBQ, DoubleTree by Hilton, and YaYa's Eurobistro. Dinners are priced at $55 per person, and space is limited.

On May 21, Beerfest's signature event takes place: The Big Brew Grant Tasting. This event will be held in Century II's Expo Hall, and will highlight food, fun, lots of beer and more! The Grand Tasting event will also feature a silent auction, so be prepared to do some bidding in between beers! The tasting will run from 1 p.m., to 4 p.m. Tickets are priced at $45 and can be purchased in person at the Century II box office, by phone at (316) 303-8100 or online. Must be 21 years of age or older to attend.


Milk Crate Challenge at Bliss Bouldering and Climbing Complex, May 22

Milk Crate Challenge at Bliss

If rock climbing isn't challenging enough, Bliss Bouldering and Climbing Complex has stepped it up a notch with the Milk Crate Challenge! Enough to test the skill of even the most experienced climbers, this challenge requires participants to move vertically while stacking and balancing on milk crates without tipping them over!

Bliss's 38 foot rock wall and 16 foot bouldering wall will also be available during the event if you want to get some climbing in! Everyone is welcome to the event, and rental equipment is available. The event will be held on Sunday, May 22 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m., and a day pass or membership is required.

Grab a deliciously local meal at Sunday's Food Trucks at the Fountain event. This event will feature outdoor yoga, live music by Stimulus Wichita and lots of food to choose from! Head to the Wichita WaterWalk Sunday from 11:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. to get in on the fun!  The event is free to attend, but food is available for purchase only. Food Trucks at the fountain occurs on one Sunday each month through October, and will also be held on these dates:

  • Sunday, June 26 
  • Sunday, July 31
  • Sunday, August 28
  • Sunday, September 25
  • Sunday, October 30.
