Tour de Cure: Helping Wichitans Affected by Diabetes

The American Diabetes Association’s Tour de Cure returns to Wichita on April 29 this year, with a goal to bring an end to Diabetes, a disease that affects 29 million Americans. Funds raised through Tour de Cure are used to increase awareness and advocacy and to further diabetic research. Some of these goals are achieved through American Diabetes Association camps, which are made possible by Tour de Cure participants.

American Diabetes Association Camps

Camp Sweet Betes is a Wichita day camp for ages 5-8 and Camp Discovery is an overnight camp in Junction City for ages 9-17. Designed specifically for children with Diabetes, these camps hosted by the American Diabetes Association serve to help children affected by Diabetes to learn about their disease and how to manage it.

Ride for a Cure

Ride for a Cure

Tour de Cure offers a 5K walk/run and bike rides in the following distances: five-mile, 25K, 50K, and 100K. The event offers full route support including rest stops with food and drink along the way.

All ages are welcome to participate. Children may ride big wheels, trikes, or bicycles with training wheels. As long as the cycle is pedaled, it’s good to go!  A $20 registration fee and a fundraising minimum of $200 will be required to participate in any walk or ride. Fundraising minimum for children is $50. Registration fees will be waived for diabetics who wish to participate.

Get Involved

The event is open to the public to attend, though donations are suggested for non-participants. In addition to the bike rides themselves, the event will offer a family activity zone, a lunch for volunteers and participants, entertainment provided by a DJ and more. A competition for  “fowling”, which combines football and bowling, will also take place. A registration fee will be required to participate in fowling, but everyone is invited to watch!

Participants raising more than $200 will receive a t-shirt and a jersey. They will also be invited to enjoy a beer garden. Those who raise $1,000 or more will be listed as champions and will gain access to a special champions tent with food and beer for lunch.
