Meet the Chefs of Wichita Restaurant Week

Wichita Restaurant Week brings ICT a great opportunity to try some if the finest gourmet cuisine our city has to offer. Many restaurants across town will participate this year, each offering a special menu for the event.Wichita Restaurant Week is great for our community. Here's a look at what a few of the participating chefs have to say about the event!

Bobby Lane, Chester's Chophouse and Wine Bar

Bobby Lane, Chester's Chophous

Bobby Lane, chef and owner of Chester's Chophouse & Wine Bar, has been cooking in restaurants for 40 years.

"We offer the finest Black Angus midwest-raised beef that we can acquire, along with bi-coastal, fresh, flown in daily seafood. We are chef-driven and update menus seasonally as well," Lane said. 

In addition, the restaurant highlights chef created daily specials. Chester's Chophouse & Wine Bar is Wichita's first wine bar and holds the Wine Spectator Award for the past decade.

Chester's has been involved with Wichita Restaurant Week since it's inception, and Lane feels as though the event benefits the community in a variety of ways.

"It gives a chance for patrons and guests to step away from their comfort zone and try new restaurants as well as giving the restaurants a chance to engage new patrons. The overall best part is that the money is raised help the Boys & Girls Club," Lane said.

"We donate $3.00 for every daily fish special dish. With our varied clientele, the fish special is one of our best selling dishes. In addition to the donation we also present the customer with a Cocoa Dolce Chocolate that lets them know we appreciate their  entree choice, as it supports the Boys & Girl's Club," he added.

Chester's featured menu will change on a daily basis.

Kevin Edward Derks, Newport Grill

Kevin Edward Derks has been the Executive Chef at Newport Grill for almost six years, and has been with PB&J Restaurants for almost ten years as both a Sous Chef and Corporate Chef.

"I saw more opportunity and potential with Wichita than any other city I worked at as a Corporate Chef," Derks said. 

Newport Grill has fresh fish flown in six days a week. The restaurant brings in (and serves) so many fish that it has reserved the number one spot for seafood sales in the state of Kansas.

"This is a California casual concept, but we are not unaccustomed to world flavors including Asian, Mediterranean, Spanish, French...," Derks said. "I let my Sous Chefs create with little oversight and I am confident they are the best."

According to Derks, Wichita Restaurant Week brings in a lot of first-time guests, something that the staff is always happy to see.

"Our expectations for food and service are outstanding and very demanding, the guests recognize that," he added. 

During Restaurant week, Newport Grill will serve Alaskan cod over parpadelle, roasted wild mushrooms, guiseppi proscuitto, toasted pine nuts and thyme cream sauce for lunch. For dinner, the restaurant offers Wild isles salmon, house made ricotta ravioli, toasted pine nuts and a radicchio black pepper balsamic reduction.

AVI Seabar & Chophouse is situated in downtown Wichita at the Drury Plaza Hotel Broadview. Known for its delicious Sterling Silver steaks, fresh seafood, hand-crafted sandwiches and more, both the diverse menu and flavors are sure to impress.  

AVI's Restaurant Week dinner is as follows:

Spicy roasted tomato-garlic aioli

Lobster, Spinach & Artichoke Dip
garlic bread, grilled crostini

Choice of House Salad/Soup

8 oz Center Cut Sirloin
Served with 1 choice of side
6 oz Canadian Salmon
Served grilled or blackened, roasted tomato butter, 1 choice of side
10 oz Oven Roasted Chicken
Marinated, bone-in roasted chicken breast over vegetable linguine
