Did Fat Tuesday creep up on you and the ever-present images of King Cakes on social media get you curious (and hungry!)? Have no fear as our 360Wichita foodies put together a great list to help you laissez le bon temps rouler!
First things first: Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday.
The origins of Mardi Gras, also called Shrove Tuesday and Fat Tuesday, dating back to medieval times where a holiday was created beginning on or after the Christian feasts of the Epiphany (Three Kings Day) and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday. It was literally time to eat the fattened calves and indulge in food before traditional feasts were commenced. Over the centuries it has evolved into major celebrations in nearly every corner of the globe.
Today Mardi Gras means throwing a really gigantic party to cities along the Gulf Coast, especially to the founding city of Mardi Gras culture, New Orleans. Some of the flavor and frivolity can be found right here in Wichita, Kansas.
