Back to School Tips for Parents
It’s that time of year again – back to school time! Looking around local stores it is starting to be apparent that the countdown is on. School supply lists, lunches to pack, morning routines, and homework are all on the horizon. Here several ways to make that first week back to school a little easier.
Make sure to start bedtime routines a few weeks in advance to ease the transition. Plan evening and morning routines and have the kids start practicing them prior to that first day back. Getting their little bodies used to the school schedule well in advance helps make the first week of school a little easier.
Get organized for school lunches and after-school snacks by hanging a shoe holder over a pantry door and putting each day’s lunch in one of the pockets. The same can be done with cold items in the refrigerator drawer. The kids can then play an active role in packing their own lunch or grabbing their own after-school snack and saves mom and dad a little bit of time in the morning!
Our family likes to set up a homework station in a quiet spot in the house. Watch for back to school deals on school supplies and use a mail organizer or clear drawers to set on a desk or table so that everything they may need for homework is ready. This saves time searching for glue, pencils, scissors in the evening at homework time.
Post the Daily Routine
Keep a master calendar where kids can see the plans for the morning, afternoon and evening. Let them take part in writing items on the calendar such as homework, class trips, picture days, and school activities. Post the calendar in an area where everyone can see it such as on the refrigerator or in the kitchen/dining room.
Have kids lay out school clothes the night before, even down to the socks! This gives kids responsibility to be organized for the next day and helps free up time for parents in the morning. Some like to use a hanging closet organizer and separate clothes for the whole week. I’m sure we’ve all had the mornings searching for a matching sock or the other shoe. If everything is laid out the week or night before this alleviates those rushed school mornings.
I hope these back to school organization tips help to save Wichita area parents sometime this school year. Happy Back-to-School Time!
