The Structure of the Higher Education System in the US

Colleges and Universities

In the States, post-secondary institutions are colleges and universities. The two terms are used interchangeably and some even refer to these as institutes (for example, the California Institute of Technology or the Massachusetts Institute of Technology). 

State and Private Colleges

There are two main categories for higher education in the US – public or state, and private. The federal government in the country doesn’t manage colleges and universities. The governments of the individual states in the US have the full authority to fund, control, and operate public colleges found within their boundaries. 

Private colleges, on the other hand, operate on their own and aren’t directly controlled by national or state governments. Some of them are privately owned by companies, while others are founded by organizations such as churches or religious denominations. For example, the University of Dayton is affiliated with the Catholic Church. 

Tech and Community Colleges

You have two choices when enrolling in high education programs in the country – community or tech colleges. Most students will enroll in academic programs, while some will choose vocational or technical colleges designed for specific job training.
