Group Learn To Skate Classes

The Fall I Session was originally scheduled to have a skipped class week of Tuesday 10/15 and Saturday 10/19 and the session would have concluded on Tuesday 10/22 and Saturday 10/26.  Class will no longer be skipped the week of 10/15 and 10/19.  That will also be the final week of the Fall I Session.  Please disregard any previous information you may have received regarding this session's dates.  The session's full updated dates can be found below.

Our Spooktacular Basic Skills Competition was also originally scheduled to be on October 26th and has been moved up to October 19th.

Our Learn to Skate classes are taught by experts utilizing the Learn To Skate USA Basic Skills curriculum. The Basic Skills program is designed by Learn To Skate USA in cooperation with U.S. Figure Skating, USA Hockey, and US Speed Skating to be the best beginning ice skating program that is fun, challenging and rewarding.  Skaters will learn the fundamentals of figure skating, speed skating and/or hockey skating.  It's simply the best way to take to the ice!

Our Learn-To-Skate program offers 5 or 6-week sessions.  Registrations include:

  • One weekly 30-minute group instructed lesson within the class hour*^
    • (*Class can be attended two times per week with an additional class fee)
    • (^Class half and class instructor are subject to change week to week without notice)
  • Skate rental (helmet rental also available upon request)
  • A free 6-punch public pass card for practice! ($60 Value!!!)
  • Required but not included: A current Learn to Skate USA membership.  Click here to go to the Learn to Skate USA website and register or renew your skater(s).

  • (Early Bird registration deadlines: 7/2 for Tuesday classes; 7/6 for Saturday classes)

*There are no classes scheduled the week of 8/6 and 8/10 during the Summer II session due to our annual figure skating club competition.  Feel free to bring your skaters to watch the events as this competition will feature skaters of all levels and ages!*

**There are no classes scheduled the week of 8/27 and 8/31 during the Summer II session due to the Labor Day holiday weekend.**

Fall I Session 2019 (September 10th through October 26th, 2019)

  • Tuesdays: 9/10, 9/17, 9/24, 10/1, 10/8, 10/15
  • Saturdays: 9/14, 9/21, 9/28, 10/5, 10/12, 10/19
  • (Early Bird registration deadlines: 8/27 for Tuesday classes; 8/31 for Saturday classes)

Fall II Session 2019 (October 29th through December 14th, 2019)

  • Tuesdays: 10/29, 11/5, 11/12, 11/19, 12/3, 12/10
  • Saturdays: 11/2, 11/9, 11/16, 11/23, 12/7, 12/14
  • (Early Bird registration deadlines: 10/15 for Tuesday classes; 10/19 for Saturday classes)

*There are no classes scheduled the week of 11/26 and 11/30 for the Thanksgiving holiday.*

Our annual Christmas Recital is tentatively scheduled for December 14th and December 15th, 2019!  More information regarding this festive annual performance will be available soon!

Other things to remember:

  • You can start at any time - our Snowplow Sam (Tots), Basic 1, and Adult 1 classes are designed to accept new students any week, with a pro-rated registration fee. 
  • Skaters are formally evaluated during the final class week of the session.  However, skaters are able to advance at any time!
  • Make-up classes may occur within the current session only.  A Make-Up Class Request form must be filled out and submitted at least 7 days in advance of the desired make up day.  Requests submitted less than 7 days prior to the desired make up day and walk-in make-ups cannot be guaranteed.  Make-Up Class Request forms can be found at the front desk. Missed classes that are not made up within the current session will not be prorated off the cost of the next session.  Click here to submit a makeup request form.

Costs & Fees

6 Week sessions: $80 ($70 early bird rate), includes:

  • Weekly 30-minute group instructed lesson
  • Skate rental during class (some helmet rentals are also available)
  • FREE 6-punch public pass for registered skater only to come practice their skills! ($60 value!)

5 Week sessions: $68 ($58 early bird rate), includes:

  • Weekly 30-minute group instructed lesson
  • Skate rental during class (some helmet rentals are also available)
  • FREE 6-punch public pass for registered skater only to come practice their skills! ($60 value!)

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Beginning with the Winter I 2020 session registration, we will be introducing new class pricing:

  • 6-Week Class Session: $90
  • 5-Week Class Session: $75
  • Early Bird Discount: Register for class up to 2 weeks prior to the start date of your first class - Receive $15 off your regular class rate
  • Regular: Register for class after two weeks prior to class but before the first day of classes - Receive Regular Class pricing.
  • Late: Register for class on the first day of your chosen class or later: Receive the regular class rate + $15 administration fee.
  • Drop-In Class Rate: Attend a single class without registering for full session in advance - $20 per class. (This option is great for new skaters who just want to try out classes before committing to a full session!) 
  • First time learn to skate registrants can register at any time during a session and no late fee will be assessed.  Early registration for first time participants is, however, highly recommended and greatly appreciated.

Annual Learn to Skate USA Membership Requirement: We are a registered program with Learn to Skate USA and follow their curriculum.  Due to this, we require that each skater registered for learn to skate (parents too, if registered for Parent and Tot classes) are current members of Learn to Skate USA.  Beginning with Summer II 2019 registration, we will require that all skaters and parents register themselves through LearnToSkateUSA.com and bring proof of membership (i.e. certificate or receipt of membership purchase) in order to take the ice for classes.  If you have been taking learn to skate classes with us prior to Summer II 2019, please contact mchambers@genesishealthclubs.com to obtain your Learn to Skate USA member number in order to renew your membership for the 2019-2020 figure skating season that runs from July 1st, 2019 to June 30th, 2020.

Early Bird Rate: Register and purchase your classes by the following deadlines and receive $10 off!:

  • Register 14 days in advance of the start date of your class

Family Discount:  Receive 10% off regular or early bird class rates for each additional family member from the same household participating in our Learn-TO-Skate programs.

Multi-class discount: Register for two or three classes per week, and receive the 2nd and/or 3rd weekly class at 50% off our regular rate!

Military Discount: Military families will receive 10% off any regular rate Learn-To-Skate class, military ID required.

RECOMMENDED CLOTHING LIST:

  • Warm Gloves
  • Helmets are highly recommended and a good idea for new beginners (bicycle helmets are acceptable, aerodynamic models not recommended)
  • Light Jacket or layered jackets
  • Light to medium weight socks (1 pair only)
  • Long sleeves and long pants
  • Jeans are not recommended as they are restrictive, shorts are not permitted.
  • Girls skirts or skating dressed may be worn with tights or leggings.

Skates and gloves may be purchased the Wichita Ice Center Pro Shop. Rink temperature averages 45°to 60° year round.

* Wichita Ice Center is not responsible for personal items that may be lost or stolen. Private lockers are available for your protection. 

 

Intro to Private Lessons

Looking to enhance your learning experience? Sign up to schedule private lessons with one of our expert coaches. These introductory private lessons are offered at a discount off our regular prices, and are a great way to help your skater focus and work on skills that are more difficult to achieve and enhances the skills the already know. It also gives the skater a more structured, yet fun, additional practice time.

Packages of 3 and 6 half-hour lessons are available. Cost is $70 for three private lessons, and $135 for six private lessons, and each lesson includes one hour of skating academy freestyle ice time.

**Skaters are eligible if they have not taken private lessons at our regular rates in the last 6 months.
