Ever since it opened its doors in 1935, Wichita Art Museum has been a place where artists come to gain inspiration from works of art. The Artist Project is an exhibition in which 50 Wichita artists—those featured in the recent book Wichita Artists in their Studios—explore WAM’s collection for work that sparks their imaginations. In this exhibition, artists reflect on what art is, what inspires them, and in so doing, they reveal the power of a museum. Their unique and passionate ways of seeing and experiencing art encourage all museum visitors to look in a personal way.

Location: Wichita Art Museum

Opulence and excess—characteristics of past ages such as the European Baroque of the 17th and 18th centuries—have returned in today’s material-driven time in which visual overload has become the norm. A fascinating vein of artists today reworks this sensibility of extravagance. Ritual and Desire explores this line that connects historical aesthetics and contemporary attitudes. It presents the work of three artists—Beth Lipman, Cassandra C. Jones, and Lauren Fensterstock. Though linked through the medium of glass, each artist creatively expands the traditional understanding of that medium.

This thriller takes place in the heat of summer in a Greenwich Village apartment complex. During a powerful heat wave, the mystery ensues with neighbors and a dose of voyeurism. The film is considered to be one of Hitchcock’s best and is included in the American Film Institute list of 100 Years--100 Movies, a reflection of the very best American films. Bring your camp chairs, picnic blankets, and Frisbees as we frolic during one of Kansas’ sultry, summer evenings. Food trucks, cash bar, and more. Event begins at 6:30 pm; live jazz by the William Flynt Quintet at 7:30 pm; screening of "Rear Window" at 9 pm.
