Great Plains Transportation Museum

The GPTM displays a wide assortment of railroad equipment, artifacts and memorabilia.

Our two largest displays are Santa Fe steam locomotive #3768 and Santa Fe FP45 diesel #93. These locomotives are unique in our collection in that they represent the last class of passenger locomotives built for the Santa Fe in their respective eras.

Santa Fe steam locomotive #3768 was the fourth locomotive of the 3765 class, which Santa Fe commissioned Baldwin to build as "the next generation" locomotive for their passenger trains in 1938. Come by and ring #3768's bell from the cab of the big black 4-8-4 or have your picture taken next to the giant 80 inch drive wheels.

With it's classic paint design our Santa Fe diesel locomotive #93 was one of eight "new generation" passenger diesels built in 1967 for Santa Fe. For the following three years, they pulled some of the same passenger trains their steam ancestors pulled.

Our indoor exhibits include railroad prints, signs, lanterns, tools, and other artifacts including a mock-up mechanical stoker used for training steam locomotive personnel.

We invite you to visit the Great Plains Transportation Museum to learn more about these and many other historical pieces and displays from railroad history.

There is no charge to browse the gift shop. Our merchandise includes: clothes, hats, books, artifacts, videos, toys, and other railroad paraphernalia.

Parking is available just east of our Douglas street entrance. Enter through the gift shop and head up stairs and see our collection of rolling stock or watch modern trains rolling by. You can also stand at our front door and see the grand old Union Station across the street.
