Wichita’s Chief Judge, James Fleetwood, has issued a warning, telling Wichitans not to fall for a new scam that threatens to send Wichitans to jail. In this scam, telephone callers notify the victims that they have missed required jury duty sessions and are now in contempt of court. The caller then tells the victim that time in jail can be avoided by paying a fine.
Victims of this scam have lost up to $500, and even more in some cases.
Fleetwood’s office has been receiving calls about the scam from concerned citizens, asking if they are going to be arrested.
Fleetwood reminds people not to fall for the scam. He also notes that the court system will never ask for payment over the phone. Rather, those who have missed jury duty will be notified by mail.
Anyone receiving a call like this should not provide any personal information, and should hang up to call the sheriff’s office immediately.
