Wichita’s Nico Hernandez received a bronze medal at the 2016 summer Olympics in Rio. City officials plan to hold a parade to welcome Nico home.
The parade is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Aug. 27 at 10 a.m. It will start at 21st and Broadway and end at 13th and Waco near Hernandez’s alma mater, North High School. The community is invited to a celebration in the high school gymnasium following the parade. The celebration will begin at 11 a.m.
In the event of inclement weather, the parade will be cancelled, and guests will be directed to the North High gymnasium for a closing ceremony.
“We are excited about Nico’s success at the Olympics and his future,” said Council Member Janet Miller, who represents District VI, which includes the parade route. “We want to give the community an opportunity to come together to celebrate Nico and thank him for representing the United States and Wichita at the Rio Olympics.”
