A Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Deputy and five or six others are being recognized for saving a man who was trapped under his vehicle in a traffic accident this weekend. The accident occurred in west Wichita at the intersection of 13th and Maize road.
When an SUV that was carrying a family of five was hit by another vehicle, the SUV rolled. Four of the five family members escaped the vehicle with minor injuries. The driver, who had been partially ejected from the SUV, was pinned underneath the vehicle, laying with his head at the median.
The driver responsible for the accident fled the scene.
After being told about the accident by a witness, Deputy Eric Smith reported to the scene. Noticing the driver under the vehicle, Smith quickly went to help. Five or six others also came to the driver’s aid. The men were able to remove the SUV from on top of the driver, who retained the ability to move his arms, hands and legs. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of any injuries that he sustained.
Later that day, Deputy Smith found and arrested the suspect who caused the accident.
Now, Smith and the others are being recognized for their heroic efforts, being called “good Samaritans” by local media.
