On Friday, Sept. 9, Wichita’s Orpheum Theatre will host a free screening of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” to pay tribute to Gene Wilder, who passed away on August 29.
The screening will be held on Friday, Sept. 9. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the film begins at 7 p.m. The film, starring Wilder as Willy Wonka, takes audiences to a world of pure imagination as it chronicles the happenings of five children who win a trip to Wonka’s chocolate factory.
Of the five winning children, four are insufferable brats: the fifth is a likeable young lad named Charlie Bucket who takes the tour with his grandfather. Watch as Wonka punishes the four nasty children for their behavior in various diabolical and candy- related methods. In the end, only Charlie and his grandfather are left.
“When we heard the news of his passing this afternoon, we knew immediately we wanted to use the theatre to pay tribute to the comedic and acting genius who has graced our screen many times throughout the years,” said Theatre Director, Barney Byard.
