Linedrives and Lipstick: The Untold Story of Women’s Baseball documents the forgotten side of America’s pastime with 45 images and 10 objects selected from one of the nation’s largest collections of women’s baseball memorabilia. From early games played before small, yet curious crowds to the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League’s 1948 season that attracted 910,000 paying fans, to the young girls of today who still struggle to secure a place in baseball, the history of women’s baseball is an exciting and tumultuous story. The exhibition will be on display at the Hall of Fame until October 20th.

This golf tournament is played in honor of Ed Wheat, an avid golfer and member and former board member of Tallgrass Country Club. A retired industrial engineer from The Boeing Company, Ed passed away from cancer in December, 2004, at the age of 67. Ed was preceded in death by a son and is survived by his wife Phyllis and three daughters who support and are very active in the memorial tournament. "Even in the face of cancer, Ed never lost his spirit and his positive attitude." Please contact Bob Phillips (robertp2@cox.net) for more information. This is a great event and we are honored that the proceeds will be donated to Victory in the Valley to support our mission of cancer support. A reception with free concessions and cash bar will be held at 5:00 pm at the Orpheum Theatre, followed by the movie at 6:00 pm and a Q&A session with producer Steve Maggi at 6:45 pm.

Walk to Defeat ALS presented by Saturn of Wichita and led by Honorary Walk Chair, Richard Vliet, is a fun, energizing event and a great way to bring awareness to the issues associated with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). See all the different teams in their inspiring t-shirts walking to raise funds to fight ALS. Most important is the look of hope seen in the eyes of those suffering from ALS when they see all the people joined together for one great cause. Enjoy music from “Against the Grain” and BOB FM, a hot dog cookout with popcorn, snow cones, and old fashioned lemonade, plus lots of games for the kids, and even a ballgame played by the Cowtown Vintage Baseball Club. The Kansas Firefighters Museum is again sponsoring a parade of fire vehicles and apparatus during Fire Prevention Week. We welcome everybody who has a fire vehicle of any description or age to come join us. We would love to have your participation. Awards will be given.
The parade starts at Broadway and Pawnee and heads North on Broadway where it will end at the Immanuel Baptist Church parking lot at 1415 S. Topeka where the Firetrucks will then be on display.
