Dean & DeLuca Opens New Cafe in Wichita

It was more than 35 years ago that Giorgio DeLuca and Joel Dean came together to create what we know today as Dean & DeLuca. DeLuca was a cheese merchant and a former school teacher, while Dean was a business manager for a publisher. Both men shared a vision, and that vision was to create a place in which sumptuous celebration took place, and a place where all of the pleasures of cooking and eating could be brought to light.

The team opened their first location in 1977 in SoHo, New York. At the corner of Prince and Greene, the store’s design was inspired by turn of the century food markets featuring white walls and subway tile accents. The first to sell many products that are common today, the store was an immediate success. Radicchio, balsamic vinegar, sun-dried tomatoes and dried mushrooms all debuted at Dean & DeLuca. The store was so successful, in fact, that in just nine short year, expansion was necessary.

In 1986, a second store opened at its current flagship location on the corner of Prince and Broadway. Designed with the concept of an outdoor marketplace and  neo-classical look, the store boasted marble floors, exposed columns and stainless steel shelving for the products. This location, too, was wildly popular, receiving rave reviews.

Dean & Deluca now has locations in New York City, Washington D.C., North Carolina, Kansas, and California, as well as international locations in Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, South Korea, Kuwait, and Dubai.

The company has housed its support center, customer care center, and distribution center in Wichita since 1996, and now the company offers Wichita something new. The first of its kind, the Wichita Dean & DeLuca café combines elements of their large markets with a smaller format café.

The open concept café style features enough seating for groups, and is a popular location for local coffee clubs to meet. The café allows guests to get comfortable while they experience all of the pleasures that cooking and eating can bring. In addition to the seating in the café, Dean & DeLuca’s Wichita location also features a strong retail component, so guests can peruse the company’s finest goods at their leisure.

It also features an espresso bar with both hot and cold drinks, grab and go menu items and a variety of made-to-order breakfast and lunch items.  We tried a few of Dean & DeLuca’s sweets and sandwiches, and the food was amazing, particularly the mean panini sandwich. Founders Giorgio DeLuca and Joel Dean wanted to share their passion for food of incomparable quality and taste, and they’ve achieved it. Dean & DeLuca is a hidden gem in Wichita. Nestled among the Shops at Tallgrass, it's a serious must-try.
