The American Diabetes Association has one mission... To prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all those affected by diabetes. Our office serves most of the state of Kansas, minus the Topeka and Kansas City Area. 24 million Americans have diabetes and 57 million have pre-diabetes. Nearly 9% or 180,000 Kansans suffer from diabetes.
Our office has several resources for our community. We have programs like Family Link Support Group and summer camps for kids to learn more about managing their diabetes (and have a great time being a kid)! We also have advocacy programs, like Safe in Schools. We raise awareness with health fairs, and events like American Diabetes Association Alert Day. We have a library here with books and journals that are free to the public as well.
We have some great events happening in 2011! Our Tour de Cure bicycle ride is back in Wichita and is coming up on May 21st. Cyclists of all levels are welcome to attend. We have a new event in 2011, our Father of the Year ceremony. Father of the Year will nominate local men who are outstanding fathers and area leaders who demonstrate the ability to balance their personal lives, serve as a role model for their children, and who make a positive difference in their community. Step Out, Walk to Fight Diabetes is coming up on October 1st at Exploration Place.
Our annual summer camps, Camp Discovery and Camp KA-DI-DA-CA will be held in the month of June. Camp Discovery is in it's 38th year. Approximately 150 children in grades 3-10 benefit from this special program which teaches them proper diabetes management skills and gives them a fun camping experience with other children living with diabetes. KA-DI-DA-CA is a day camp held at Camp Hiawatha in Wichita, KS. KAnsas DIabetes DAy CAmp is for for kids in grades k-2 and their siblings up to the age of 10. Camp regristation has begun, to register or for more information visit our websites.

We are always looking for people to get involved with the ADA, whether it is volunteering on a committee/event or participating in one of our events. The more people we have behind us, the more likely we will fulfill our mission!
